Rajkumar Santoshi Said No, And Here's Why
Sanjay Dutt, along with Aksha Kamboj of Aspect Global and Jyoti Deshpande from Jio Studios, officially announced Khalnayak Returns on April 24 in Mumbai. Subhash Ghai, the Showman behind the 1993 original, was there too, but quickly clarified he wouldn't be directing the sequel. That left a big question mark over who would take the reins.
Enter Rajkumar Santoshi. Our sources tell Bolly Tadka that Sanju Baba was really keen on Santoshi. Why him, you ask? Well, Sanjay Dutt reportedly felt that "Raj ji has an understanding of commercial cinema and would be able to do justice" to the sequel. And get this – these two powerhouses have never worked together before! Sanjay Dutt saw this as a golden opportunity to finally collaborate on such a special project.
So, Dutt met with Santoshi, made the pitch, and, as we said, the answer was a no-go. A bit of a shame, really, as that pairing could have been full paisa vasool. Santoshi’s plate is absolutely packed right now. He’s neck-deep in giving the final touches to his much-anticipated film, Lahore 1947, starring Sunny Deol. Not just that, he’s also got a couple of fresh scripts ready that he plans to pitch to none other than Sunny Deol again, and even Aamir Khan! So, time, it seems, is the biggest villain here.
Despite the refusal, Santoshi was reportedly "touched by Sanjay Dutt’s gesture." He apparently wished Dutt all the best and even complimented his look and swag in the intro teaser. Class act, that Santoshi!
The Jailhouse Rock Inspiration for Khalnayak Returns
While the director hunt continues, let's not forget how Khalnayak Returns even came about. Sanjay Dutt dropped a bombshell at the announcement event, revealing the spark for the sequel came to him while he was... wait for it... in jail! Now that's a story.
He recounted how he used to play music for the inmates, and they'd constantly demand songs from Khalnayak. So, he asked them, "Agar Khalnayak phir se banaye, toh kaun dekhna chahega?" Every single one of the 4000 prisoners apparently cheered in unison! He then asked them to send him one-page ideas for the film. Can you imagine reading 4000 one-pagers? Sanju Baba did, and one of those ideas really clicked with him. Talk about full circle, yaar!
So, the search for the perfect director is now back on. Sanjay Dutt is reportedly "considering other filmmakers" to bring this jail-inspired sequel to life.
