The buzz around Sara Arjun being cast opposite Ranveer Singh in Aditya Dhar’s Dhurandhar has been pretty loud, especially concerning the noticeable age gap between them. Seriously, you couldn’t scroll five minutes without seeing someone talk about it. But guess what? Turns out, the makers themselves had their fair share of jitters about the casting choice.
Casting director Mukesh Chhabra, the man behind so many memorable faces, recently spilled the beans to Bollywood Hungama. He admitted that both he and director Aditya Dhar initially weren't entirely sure about finalising Sara for the role. Talk about an unexpected reveal!
The Year-Long Search for Dhurandhar's Leading Lady
Chhabra explained that from day one, their vision for the female lead was crystal clear: a completely fresh face. No familiar names, no baggage from previous films. “Aditya and I were very clear that we needed a face that looked like she belonged to that world.” He felt that if they cast someone who’d already done a couple of films, the audience wouldn’t connect with the character the same way. It had to be someone the hero was truly meeting for the first time, onscreen and off.
And when they say "fresh face," they really meant it. Chhabra revealed they conducted a marathon audition process, spanning almost a year, with over 1,200 to 1,300 auditions! Can you imagine? That’s some serious dedication to finding the perfect fit. The brief was specific: someone authentic to the film's setting, fluent in both Hindi and Urdu, and radiating innocence and simplicity. Ranveer’s character, apparently, was drawn to exactly that kind of girl.
Sara Arjun, who’d done some child acting but never a full-fledged lead in Bollywood, slowly emerged from this massive pool. She made it through the hundreds, then fifties, then tens, until she was one of the final three or four. Chhabra said, "Sara was closest to what the brief needed. There were two or three others who were also close, but she matched it exactly."
"She Looked a Little Young": The Makers' Initial Doubt
Here’s where it gets really interesting. Despite Sara ticking almost all the boxes, there was a snag. Chhabra confessed, “Initially we felt she looked a little young.” Both he and Aditya Dhar had this doubt. It's a valid concern, especially when you're pairing someone with a superstar like Ranveer Singh, and the age gap is already a talking point among fans.
So, what did they do? They went for another look test. Changed the makeup slightly, tried a different approach, all to make sure she didn't appear "too young." And guess what? It worked. After that second test, the team was confident, and Sara Arjun officially landed the role. It wasn't an easy decision, but it sounds like they really fought for their vision.
Honestly, it’s refreshing to hear casting directors be this transparent. It shows the thought process, the struggle, and the sheer volume of work that goes into finding just the right actor. Whether the audience ultimately accepts the pairing is another story, but you can't fault them for trying to stick to their character brief. Let's see how Dhurandhar fares when it hits screens. Pakka, this casting story will be a talking point for a while!
