Courtroom Drama, Matka Style!
Phew, what a relief for Roy Kapur Productions! You know how these things go in Bollywood – just when a show starts buzzing, some legal eagle swoops in. Well, good news for fans of Vijay Varma and director Nagraj Manjule: their much-anticipated series, Matka King, has officially dodged a bullet. The Bombay High Court has given a clean chit, clearing the title dispute and ensuring the show streams on Prime Video without a hitch.
So, what was all the fuss about? A certain Ms. Tanuja Bhagat decided to throw a wrench in the works, filing a suit against the makers. Her main beef? She claimed the title Matka King infringed on rights, and more importantly, that the series was based on her late grandfather, Kalyanji Bhagat – whom she asserted was the *original* “Matka King” – all without her say-so. Honestly, claiming a title based on a historical figure can get tricky, especially when family legacy is involved. She even sought an urgent injunction to stop the series release. Talk about high stakes!
But the courts weren't having it. On April 15, 2026, Justice Sharmila Deshmukh at the Bombay High Court heard both sides and, thankfully for Roy Kapur Productions, declined to grant any interim relief. Fast forward to April 20, and the plaintiff's counsel informed the court they were withdrawing the suit. Boom! Legal challenge over. The suit and interim application disposed of. That’s how you clear the path, folks!
The Real Game: What's 'Matka King' All About?
Now that the legalities are out of the way, let's talk about the show itself, because this one sounds like full paisa vasool! Matka King officially premiered on Prime Video on April 17, 2026, right in the middle of this court kerfuffle. Talk about confidence, or maybe just really tight deadlines, eh? It's an eight-episode period drama, set in the vibrant, gritty 1960s Bombay. The story follows Brij Bhatti, played by the chameleon-like Vijay Varma, a cotton trader who somehow turns the underground Matka gambling game into a nationwide phenomenon. Vijay Varma, yaar, he’s just killing it these days with his choice of roles.
The cast list is pretty stellar too. We’ve got Saie Tamhankar as Bhatti’s wife, Barkha, and Kritika Kamra as Gulrukh. And get this, the legendary Gulshan Grover is in it as merchant Laljibhai. The ensemble also boasts names like Siddharth Jadhav, Jamie Lever, Girish Kulkarni, and Bharat Jadhav. With Nagraj Popatrao Manjule (the man behind Sairat, remember?) directing and Abhay Koranne creating the series, you know it’s going to be something special. Produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur and team under Roy Kapur Films, this one had all the ingredients for a hit.
Bolly-Royalty Approves!
It seems the buzz for Matka King isn't just limited to us journos and fans. The series has been trending online, and guess who’s been showering praise? None other than Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, and director Rajkumar Hirani! When these heavyweights give their nod, you know the show has hit a sweet spot. It's been one of the notable digital releases this month, and with the court ruling out of the way, its run on Prime Video can continue uninterrupted. Looks like Vijay Varma has another winner on his hands. Go watch it, you won't regret it!
